As you can see, we're just getting this message board off the ground. Please introduce yourself and start posting!
I'm Barb, I live in Orange, VA, mom to 5 kids ages 6-22. I'm a relative newbie to paddling, this only being my second season.
I still have a ways to go to get in shape and increase my stamina. I'm hoping to meet like minded individuals who enjoy paddling flat water and easy moving water for nature watching, photography, and fishing, or just hanging out. I usually kayak with one or more of my kiddos, but would be interested in meeting other adults with similar interests.
I usually paddle the Rappahannock River, Motts Run Reservoir, Lake Orange and Lake Anna from home, and the James and Shenandoah Rivers when camping.

Neat site! Thanks! My DH and I canoed on the James River recently while we were camping at James River State Park. I would like to kayak with a group some time. I've also kayaked on the Swift Creek at Pocahontas State Park which is a very pretty creek. I live near Pokie State Park in Chesterfield, VA. I need to kayak in nice, slow water! : )

Welcome Sue, glad you stopped by. I'm hoping this place will pick up in time, I've got a few more people who said they would be stopping by. Why don't you post under the paddling partners where you like to paddle and maybe you'll find someone nearby.

What a great site! My name is John. I have two boys, Daniel (10), and Steve (7). We live in Charlottesville, and have enjoyed kayaking on the Rivanna Reservoir, particularly the section which threads its way through Ivy Creek natural area, and gradually narrows down into a barely navigable creek. We regularly see beavers, herons, deer, and turtles. I have also seen owls, osprey, a muskrat and numerous other critters. The boys enjoy the wildlife and the paddling once we have moved beyond the general state of inertia. I am keen to find other paddlers with whom to share the beauties of our local waterways. The Rivanna river is a wonderful resource for those living in Charlottesville. I have a tandem sit-on-top, and two solo recreational kayaks, and might be able to accommodate a passenger if someone is interested but boatless.

Welcome John. I've never paddled the Rivana, how about posting a trip report for us. My boys are 22, 20, almost 15 & 13, and I have one daughter who is 6. I usually paddle with the 3 younger ones, but we still need another boat when we all go out. Maybe we can get a mulit family paddling group together in the near future on the Rivana.

Wheeeee! I've been trying to get some folks together in Northern Virginia for kayaking.
There are some terrific flat water paddling places here....Mason Neck State Park, Fountainhead Regional Park, Algonkian Regional Park or - my favorite "happy place" for just unwinding - Piscataway Creek near Ft. Washington, Md. All are within about 1/2 hour from my home.
Last time I went up Piscataway Creek I saw blue heron, beavers, nesting geese, huge turtles and even a water snake. Gotta go high tide only though!
Will be ready for outings after July 1.

Thanks-we were wondering on our last Shenandoah trip how to find more great places! Billy (17) Emma (7) and Kay (3) are quite the water bugs. We have 2 boats not exactly canoes or kayaks, they sit low in the water but are open. Great for slow water and family-sized. It would be great to meet some fellow paddlers. We also love to camp. Jen

Welcome Ann & Jen!
Go ahead and post under the trip reports your favorite paddling spots, I'm sure there are some that most of us aren't even aware of. And be sure to let any of your rec paddling friends know that we are here and trying to grow state wide!

Well it seems it is letting me post here although I am not logged in. I try to login and it tells me invalid user name and password. I clicked to have user name and password sent to me. Opened the email and it is correct as I entered it. Can you go in and approve me as a user so I can log in? The validation link did not work.

Hi, all! We're better known as "Ju-Di" on other groups but this forum won't take the dash!! Oh, well! We each have a kayak and enjoy just paddling around with no particular destination. We, too, live near Pokie and have kayaked there with Sue-Sue (Hey, Gal!). Jerry and lovely bride got their 'yaks after that camping trip, I think. Haven't met Barb or rdean in person but hope to! Barb, we like to geocache and would like to do more in conjunction with 'yaking or camping. Di likes to hang her bare feet over the side of her 'yak while she drowns worms. We recently decided that drowning worms is called fishing and bringing fish home is called catching!!! Latest plunge for our 'yaks was in Kerr Resevoir(sp??) over Mem. Day.
Thanks for the board, Barb!

Welcome Ju-Di, glad you made it over. I think we should plan a group paddle at Pokie sometime soon, I put in for bit last summer, but didn't go far because I was still sharing my single kayak with my then 5 year old and she was too uncomfortable (and her butt was wet, lol). So I didn't really get to see much of it, but would like to see more. We have the tandem now, so she just kicks back and lets me take us where I want to go.
All- Lets see if we can get some conversations going on the other forums. I'm still trying to get the word out, but I think this board has the potential to grow. So like they say, if you post, they will come!
